At Ashburton Primary School, we value, celebrate and respect the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of all our students.

We provide support and targeted programs for English as an Additional Language (EAL) students to assist them to learn, participate and succeed in the school environment. Our EAL program provides small group support based on ability, skill and the highest need, which is determined by the staff.

The EAL teacher consults with classroom teachers to make sure student’s language skills and needs are met in the classroom and monitors progress using the Victorian EAL Curriculum.

The EAL curriculum and program focuses on developing English proficiency in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening and has a strong focus on supporting students to:

  • Develop English language and literacy skills
  • Read, understand and create texts with accuracy, fluency, purpose and correct grammar
  • Expand their knowledge of vocabulary used across different topics
  • Understand how language changes depending on the situation (formal and informal)
  • Develop their communication skills to enable full participation in learning

Students receiving EAL support either in the classroom or through the small group support receive an alternative English report based on the Victorian EAL Curriculum.
