What's happening in Year 5?

Our Grade 5s have had an exciting and productive start to the term! They’ve been fully engaged in their learning and continuing to build valuable skills.

Our focus over the last few weeks have been:

  • Debating, which has been a highlight, with students gaining an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each speaker.
  • Students have begun their rich assessment task about Australian Parliament Milestones. They will be creating a monument in Minecraft based on their historic topic.
  • Students have been learning about credible sources, perspective, and bias in Reading.
  • Mastering mental multiplication strategies and converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time has strengthened their maths skills. Also had a focus around prime and square numbers.
  • Interschool sport has been a hit, with students showing great teamwork and enthusiasm.
  • Connecting with their Prep Pals has been a heart warming experience, continuing to be good role models when teaching the preps the expected behaviours of Ashburton.

Also, NAPLAN is off to a strong start, with students showing focus and effort in both writing and reading. The grade 5s got to enjoy a footy workshop with former student and Hawthorn VFL player Jas Fleming. Which was a standout moment!
